“Not a Cheater”: Jaime Munguia Responds to Failed Drug Test with Full Cooperation

In boxing, the punches are supposed to come in the ring — not from a drug test. But this week, rising star Jaime Munguia found himself in the headlines for a very different kind of blow.

Munguia’s A-sample tested positive for exogenous testosterone metabolites following his May 3 victory over Bruno Surace. According to his team, this was a complete shock — and the boxer is fully cooperating with the ongoing anti-doping review process.

Team Munguia: “Jaime is not a cheater”

In a lengthy statement, Munguia’s camp emphasized that the fighter has never failed a drug test in over 100 screenings across his professional career until now. They called the result “deeply concerning” and said they’re actively investigating every supplement, pharmaceutical, and treatment he used during training camp.

They also pointed out that all other tests conducted during that camp came back clean — making this failed result a puzzling outlier.

“Jaime did not knowingly or intentionally take anything that would violate anti-doping regulations,” the statement reads. “To suggest otherwise is not only inaccurate, but deeply unfair.”

So what happens now?

The B-sample result is still pending, and Munguia’s team has not yet been informed of the exact levels detected — a detail that will likely be critical to the case. In the meantime, the fighter is maintaining his innocence and asking the public not to rush to judgment.

They also clarified the roles of others in Munguia’s camp, distancing coach Eddy Reynoso and any association with Canelo Álvarez’s team from involvement in Munguia’s nutrition or supplements. The only person responsible for overseeing supplements, they say, is Marco Antonio Pérez Espinoza, who is cooperating fully.

Clean competition matters

Munguia’s statement stressed that he’s long been an advocate of VADA testing and clean boxing practices, understanding the serious risks PEDs pose in a contact sport. His team cited other instances where athletes were later cleared due to supplement contamination — and expressed hope that a full review will bring similar clarity here.

For now, the case remains under review, but Munguia is cooperating and says he takes responsibility for full compliance with testing protocols. As the B-sample and further investigations unfold, the boxing world will be watching — and hopefully reserving judgment until all the facts are in.
