Drug Test Dodge? Musk Reportedly Gets a Heads-Up Before SpaceX Screenings

Random drug tests aren’t supposed to come with a calendar invite — unless, allegedly, you’re Elon Musk.
According to a recent New York Times exposé summarized by Yahoo News, SpaceX insiders claim Musk has been tipped off about upcoming drug tests — despite the company’s obligations as a federal contractor to conduct unannounced screenings.
Why does this matter? Because Musk has openly admitted to using ketamine (allegedly prescribed), and insiders suggest he’s also been dabbling in ecstasy, psilocybin mushrooms, Adderall, and possibly cocaine. Even more striking, sources say his drug use ramped up during his recent political involvement, including support for Donald Trump’s campaign.
Inside the Allegations
The NYT report paints a surreal picture: Musk carrying a pill organizer with at least 20 daily meds, confessing to bladder issues linked to ketamine use, and allegedly planning detox windows before test day thanks to early warnings. If true, this undermines the integrity of SpaceX's compliance with federal drug testing standards.
Typically, companies working with the federal government — like SpaceX — are required to test employees for substances such as cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and PCP. Some expanded panels may include MDMA (ecstasy), but ketamine is rarely tested for unless specifically requested.
Two Standards of Testing?
As the report notes, many employees without Musk's influence face the full consequences of failing a test. But if Musk is avoiding scrutiny through advance notice — or alternative samples — it raises questions about workplace fairness, executive privilege, and even national security.
It's not the first time Musk's substance use has made headlines, either. In fact, a related bill is already in play: Rep. Mikie Sherrill has introduced legislation that would require Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team to undergo routine drug testing if they want to retain access to sensitive federal information.
While Musk has claimed to use ketamine for depression — and may have legitimate prescriptions for other medications — the frequency and combinations described by insiders sound well outside clinical norms.
