Drug Test Drama: Lawmaker Proposes Testing Elon Musk Over Government Access

In what might be the most high-profile drug test demand in recent history, Congress is setting its sights on none other than Elon Musk.

Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) has introduced a bill that would require Musk — along with his Department of Government Efficiency (yes, DOGE) employees — to pass regular drug tests in order to maintain their Special Government Employee (SGE) status. That status gives them access to highly sensitive U.S. government information, from Treasury data to military secrets.

Sherrill didn’t mince words in her April 1st press release, saying, “Those with access to sensitive information must be thoroughly vetted, clear-eyed, and exercise good judgment.” According to the congresswoman, Musk’s “well-documented history of drug use” makes him a national security concern — especially in the wake of recent lapses involving unsecured chats and classified data leaks.

A Billionaire, a Doge, and a Drug Test Walk into Congress...

While the acronym DOGE may sound like a meme, Sherrill isn’t laughing. Her bill calls for Musk and other SGE-designated individuals to undergo initial and random drug testing as long as they retain that clearance — mirroring the expectations already in place for other executive branch employees.

The argument is simple: if government employees can be tested to ensure they’re not vulnerable to blackmail or impairment, why not extend the same standard to billionaires granted access to nuclear briefings?

From SpaceX to Urine Tests?

While Musk himself hasn’t responded publicly to the proposed legislation, the bill lands in the middle of a broader campaign by Sherrill to investigate Musk’s influence in federal agencies. She’s called for Inspector General inquiries, backed legislation limiting his access to Social Security data, and stood with federal employees reportedly fired by Musk and DOGE.

And yes — the timing is ripe for debate. With tensions high around national security and political power grabs, the idea of putting Musk’s access through a urinalysis filter is gaining attention.
