Doctor Blames Bagels for Drug Test Failure Amid Mounting Misconduct Claims

Posted June 2025 • Drug Test Digest Team

If you’ve ever joked about poppy seed bagels causing a false positive, Sydney ENT surgeon Dr. Tobias Pincock just turned it into a legal defense. Unfortunately for him, Australia’s medical tribunal didn’t find it quite so appetizing.

Dr. Pincock, currently barred from practicing until mid-2026, tested positive for an entire pharmacy’s worth of substances—cocaine, morphine, oxycodone, Temazepam, and more—while under orders to submit to routine and random drug screenings.

The Bagel Blame Game

When confronted with a positive drug test in 2022, Dr. Pincock claimed his results stemmed from consuming poppy seed bagels. But the Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) wasn’t convinced. Investigators noted that Pincock sent a staged photo of bagels, a toaster, and a knife to the Medical Council after the test—suggesting an attempt to retroactively justify the outcome.

Let’s be clear: poppy seeds can affect opioid test results. But when you’ve already tested positive for cocaine, Endone, and benzodiazepines on separate occasions, the “I just love carbs” excuse doesn’t quite hold up.

Repeat Offender

This wasn’t Dr. Pincock’s first run-in with medical regulators. In 2011, he was reprimanded for performing a rhinoplasty on a patient just 45 minutes after they had suffered cardiac arrest. He reasoned the patient might be “disappointed” if the surgery was delayed.

In 2016, he was accused of recreational nitrous oxide use. And in 2024, he was found guilty of professional misconduct for encouraging patients to invest over $500,000 in a trust he controlled—while maintaining a doctor-patient relationship.

Financial Ruin and a Professional Cliff

Dr. Pincock was declared bankrupt in 2018 with nearly $7 million in debt. The HCCC now cites repeated violations of drug testing protocols, failure to attend mandated treatments, and ongoing integrity issues.

He’s currently blocked from re-registering as a clinician for another nine months—though that overlaps with his existing suspension. At this point, his comeback is about as likely as a bagel-based detox plan.
