New Detox Center in Henrico County Targets Opioid Crisis Head-On
Published June 15, 2025 | Detox Tips & Guides
If you’ve ever wondered what local governments are doing to fight the opioid epidemic beyond press conferences and awareness campaigns, Henrico County just dropped a powerful answer.
Officials in Henrico County, Virginia, have announced plans for a new Detox and Residential Treatment Center expected to open by summer 2026. The facility will include 60 beds and offer medically supervised detox and inpatient treatment for substance use disorders.
The move comes in response to an alarming rise in overdose deaths across the Commonwealth — a 59% increase per 100,000 residents since 2019. Henrico County in particular has seen a 167% increase in opioid-related deaths among Black residents, a figure that helped it secure identification from the Virginia Opioid Abatement Authority (VOAA) as one of the highest-need areas in the state.
A Flexible, Community-First Detox Facility
Built through a public-private partnership between the county and Pyramid Healthcare, the facility will offer:
- 10 beds for intensive detox (typically 3–5 days)
- 50 beds for up to 30 days of inpatient treatment
- Flexibility to shift beds based on community needs
- A gymnasium and supportive services onsite
Pyramid Healthcare, headquartered in Altoona, PA, brings experience operating facilities across seven states, including several in Virginia. Under a 30-year lease agreement, Pyramid will run the Henrico center at no cost to the county, while the $10.7 million construction is being covered by county funds.
Admissions will run through Henrico Area Mental Health & Developmental Services and Pyramid Healthcare. Importantly, patients will be accepted regardless of insurance or residency, and Henrico residents will receive priority access at other Pyramid locations if beds are full.

Breaking Ground on Real Change
The announcement was marked with a livestreamed groundbreaking ceremony on June 3. For Henrico County — and especially for its underserved communities — this center represents more than just infrastructure. It’s a direct investment in public health, recovery, and equity.
