Detox After COVID Vaccine? Experts Call It Nonsense
You’ve braved the needle, read the FAQs, and maybe even nursed a sore arm—but now you’re seeing “vaccine detox” supplements popping up on social feeds. Do you really need to flush out your COVID shot? According to top virologists and infectious-disease experts, the answer is a firm “no.”
In a recent report by CNN, podcast host Meghan McCain drew attention (and controversy) when she promoted an $89.99 “detox” supplement claiming to “break down spike protein” after COVID-19 vaccination or infection. Vaccine authorities quickly pushed back, emphasizing that there is nothing to detox from—because the vaccines aren’t toxins in the first place.
Why “Vaccine Detox” Doesn’t Hold Water
Dr. Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the University of Saskatchewan’s Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization, explains: “The mRNA vaccines instruct your cells to make a small piece of the spike protein, which is then metabolized and cleared rapidly. There’s no lingering toxin requiring ‘detoxification.’”
Similarly, Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University Medical Center notes that both the mRNA “blueprint” and its lipid nanoparticle delivery system degrade quickly—far too quickly to pose any long-term threat or to justify a post-vaccine cleanse. “It’s simply not scientifically a valid concept,” he says.
From Misinformation to Disinformation
Experts warn that “vaccine detox” products exploit fear and confusion. Harvard’s Dr. Pieter Cohen calls it a “perfect scenario for supplements to jump in to the rescue”—creating a false health concern and then selling the remedy.
Unlike pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements aren’t vetted by the FDA before hitting the shelves. This regulatory gap allows companies to market unproven claims to anxious consumers, often with celebrity endorsements and personalized discount codes—tactics that can mislead even the well-informed.
Real Detox Resources for Legitimate Needs
